Paul Henry RHA RUA (1876-1958) On Killary Bay Oil on canvas, 35.5 x 41cm (14 x 16'') Signed, inscribed with title verso Provenance: Private collection, U.K. he current owners grandfather attended the Dublin Horse Show annually between 1936 and 1939, and each year he marked the occasion by acquiring similar sized works by Paul Henry in Combridges. In December 2011 we sold The Roadside Cottage (Lot 14) for ?90,000 and this year we are delighted to offer two further works from this collection, the present lot and lot 44. Exhibited: Recent Paintings of Kerry and Wicklow by Paul Henry, Combridge's Gallery, Dublin, from 12 November 1937 (15) Literature: S. B. Kennedy, Paul Henry: with a catalogue of the Paintings, Drawings, Illustrations, Yale University Press, New Haven and London, 2007, p. 289, catalogue number 962. The light palette and thin paintwork seen here typify Henry's work of the mid and late 1930s, a period of calm in the artist's life after the difficult years of the previous decade. Henry's 1937 Dublin exhibition was entitled 'Recent Paintings'-and judged stylistically this work must date from around 1936-7-but in exhibitions with this title he often included pictures made earlier.
