William Conor OBE RHA RUA ROI (1881-1968) At the Races Pencil and coloured pencil, 33 x 24.5cm (13 x 9.6'') Signed John Magee, Belfast label verso, inscribed 'bought from Mr. Conor 1910' Provenance: From the collection of John Loudon, Dunmurry, Belfast and thence by descent to current owner. John Loudon was an amateur artist and friend and supporter of fellow artists such as Paul Henry (Lot 36 28/03/2012), William Conor, J.H. Craig and Maurice Wilks (Lots 160 & 161) The setting of this work is thought to be at the railings of Down Royal Racecourse which is one of Ireland's oldest raecourses having been established by charter in 1685 and now located at The Maze, Lisburn. When people criticised the type of scenes and people Conor painted he replied ''it is only these humble people I was interested in'' (Belfast Telegraph 9/12/64) - ''I knew them well as I was one of them''
