Walter Frederick Osborne RHA ROI (1859-1903) Galway Market Scene Oil on board, 19.1 x 28cm (7½ x 11'') Signed. Provenance: The Pyms Gallery, London, from whom purchased by current owner Literature: ''Walter Osborne in the West of Ireland'' by Julian Campbell 2004, Fig. 8 p26, full page detail p108, Cat. No. 6 The majority of Osborne's Galway paintings are set near the Claddagh. ''The Claddagh'' was the area of Galway that most fascinated artists, writers and other visitors to the town in the 19th Century. It was ostensibly, a village in a town, a settlement between the town and the sea. ''Galway Market scene'' shows a group of market women in the square beside the harbour. Although small in scale, the picture is of great interest because the figures are shown larger and closer to the viewer than the majority of Osborne's Galway Market pictures. In the left centre a group of women are shown talking and smiling, their faces visible. In the centre other women are seated on the ground near their baskets of fish. This is a quintessential genre street scene by Osborne, with a real living quality and atmosphere and the picture could have been equally successfully on a large canvas. Dr. Julian Campbell
