Daniel ONeill visited North Donegal on sketching trips regularly in the late 1940s / early 1950s including one together with Gerard Dillon in the summer of 1947. Rathmullan was a favourite spot and he painted many views around the area including this winter view at Knockalla which is just North of Rathmullan town going towards Portsalon. This snowy view is a very similar in composition to a work in The Ulster Museum collection called Knockalla Hills, Donegal which seems to be a view in summer rather than winter.
