It's South Connemara, and forms part of a cycle of works by the artist cr 1934-36, broadly known as " Sailing up to Bealadangan".
He was staying with Aarland Ussher over several months and in various seasons and painted the local boats on their passages up and around the Islands and seaways of the area. This is unusual as it has no craft of any size in the composition, but I assume the foreground rock formations and the two different tidal movements is what interested him pictorially. There were great horizon lines to be observed in the area, and the remnants of a worked landscape always interested him for the marks and scratches left upon the land by earlier farmers. Autumn and Spring he liked as the oblique light cast, revealed those earlier attempts at agriculture upon the face of the land.
