Anton Corbijn (b.1955, Dutch) U2 Original photographic print, 40 x 50cm Unique Signed by all four members of U2 and dated (19)82 Provenance: Presented to the present owner by U2's designer Mr. Steve Averill The current lot is an original image from Anton Corbijn's first ever photoshoot with U2 in Sweden in 1982, and was in fact the second choice for the gatefold spread of the War album, released the following year. Possibly the most famous image by Corbijn of the band is the Death Valley photograph, used for the cover of The Joshua Tree in 1986. The current work is of particular interest and rarity as it pre-dates the Death Valley work and we believe it to be the earliest photograph by Corbijn of the band to reach the auction market to date. Corbijn is internationally renowned as one of the world's leading photgraphers of the music industry and Hollywood glitterati. He has worked with artists such as Mick Jagger, Michael Stipe, Kurt Cobain, Naomi Campbell and Cameron Diaz and his images appear frequently on the pages of publications such as Vogue, Vanity Fair and Rolling Stone Magazine. Corbijn sees his art however, as relating to real human beings rather than celebrity icons and says that his ''biggest fear is that I'll photograph an idea rather than a person....so i try to be quite sensitive to how people are''. The result is an entirely unique interpretation of his human subjects which may more often be associated with popular images and culture rather than any sense of individuality.
