Paul Spellman (b.1970) Dalkey Island from Killiney Hill I Oil on canvas, 50 x 70cm Signed and inscribed on stretcher Born in Dublin, Paul Spellman is inspired by the rich tradition of Irish landscape painting. He completed his Masters in History of Art at University College Dublin in 1993. As part of his degree, he completed a thesis on the prominent landscape painter, Peter Collis RHA. He has been painting landscapes for many years and has recently begun to exhibit his work with great success. His recent solo exhibition at Dalkey Castle and Heritage Centre in May this year was virtually sold-out on the opening night. Spellman is particularly inspired by the land and seascape of Killiney Bay and surrounding area of South County Dublin close to where he lives. He has also completed images of the West of Ireland, the South of France and Ostia in Italy. His work, while representational, is concerned with the form in the landscape rather than being overly concerned with capturing the topographical details. He uses a naturalistic palette to convey the essence of the scene before him. He seeks out images which capture his imagination and contain interesting tonal contrasts and a strong formal structure. Paul Spellman is currently working on a series of landscapes of Brittany, resulting from his recent visit to famous artistic locations such as Pont-Aven, Le Pouldu and St Guenole in Finistere.
