Black Raven Pipe Band, Lusk A photographic postcard with an original photograph of Matt Kelly, standard bearer and founder member of the Band, circa 1917. The Black Raven Pipe Band was founded in 1910 by Thomas Ashe, then a local teacher, who died on hunger strike in September 1917. The material for band uniforms was procured by F.J. Bigger, the noted antiquarian, who also supplied a Black Raven flag (the origin of this flag goes back to the Battle of Clontarf, when Brian Boru captured a black raven flag from the Danes.) Many of the band members fought at the Battle of Ashbourne in 1916, when a Volunteer force led by Ashe defeated a force of armed RIC men. In a folding leather case, a very rare item.
