A RARE WHITE JADE 'GOOSE AND BIRD OF PREY' FINIAL
China, Attributed to Jin or Yuan Dynasty
The finial carved in intricately openwork with a bird of prey above a wild goose amidst interlaced leafy lotus tendrils, the stone of grey-white tone with very minor russet inclusions, four holes at the base. Sold together with an incense burner's wooden lid.
H: 5,2 cm
Weight: 45,5 grams
Notes:
1. This piece does stand out as to the quality of its carving. Indeed, there is very few jade material left to the inner part, where the lotus tendrils are sweet and curvy.
2. For a related piece at public auction, please refers to Bonham's London, United Kingdom, 2010/11/11, lot 11, sold for GBP36.000 BP incl.
3. Similar carving of a wild goose and bird of prey can be seen on a jade finial, attributed to Liao or Jin Dynasty, from the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Jadeware (II), Hong Kong, 1995, pl. 97.
