An event of Paris Asia Week, the Pagoda Fair will feature masterpieces from a short-listed selection of dealers and auction houses (7 in total). The fair is named after the exceptional venue in which it takes place: the Pagoda of C.T. LOO (Ching Tsai Loo, 1880-1957) (the number 1 Asian art and antiques dealer of the 20th century), an outstanding Chinese-style building overlooking Monceau park in the 17th district.
Introduction:
This sale aims at promoting visual arts and antiques from Vietnam, with an emphasis on the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de l’Indochine and his major students. Amidst the notable consignments in the sale:
#1- A MAJOR SIX-FOLD LACQUER SCREEN BY LÊ QUỐC LỘC (€200,000-€400,000):
Adam’s are proud to unveil a newly discovered masterpiece by a prominent artist of the Ecole des Beaux Arts de l’Indochine: Lê Quốc Lộc (Vietnam, 1918-1987). Born in Tuấn Quang hamlet, a student of Joseph Inguimberty (1896-1971), Lê Quốc Lộc graduated from the above-mentioned school in 1942 (12th class). One of the most-prized Vietnamese lacquer artists of the 20th century, along with Phạm Hậu and Nguyễn Gia Trí, he is also known for having been the deputy director of and a professor at the Gia Đinh (Saigon) School of Applied Arts (1959-1967) and to have been awarded the Ho Chi Minh Prize for Literature and Art (in 2000).
#2- A MAJOR LACQUER PANEL BY ALIX AYMÉ (€100,000-€200,000):
ADAM’S are proud to unveil a newly discovered masterpiece by a professor at the ecole des beaux arts de l’indochine: Alix Aymé (1894-1989). This lacquer panel depicts a young melancholic girl with flowers. The gold-lacquered background elevates the young model to the rank of a byzantine icon, while the pastel flowers not only bring freshness but also contribute to the feminine and sensual soul of this portrait.
#3- THREE WORKS BY LÊ PHỔ FROM A SINGLE COLLECTION (€40,000-€60,000, €30,000-40,000 & €20,000-€30,000):
From the heirs of René et Raymonde Altobianchi, antique dealers active in the 1960s-1980s in l’Escarène, near Nice, French Riviera, a selection of three works of art by one of the leading figures of modern Vietnamese art, Lê Phổ (1907-2001). The first one, a Chinese ink on paper, depicts two washing ladies. The second one, an ink and colors on silk, depict a Dova. The third one, a gouache on paper, depicts a bouquet of flowers.
