TWO SETS OF SIX COMMEMORATIVE SILVER COFFEE SPOONS, the first set of six in Old English pattern, the gilt bowls depicting Edward VIII, Prince of Wales, Birmingham 1925, mark of James Swann & Son; together with another set of six silver coffee spoons depicting crowned King Edward VIII inscribed ''Coronation King Edward VIII'', Birmingham 1936, mark of James Swann & Son. (12) Provenance: Gifted during WWII to a young boy who resided in Ranelagh, Co. Dublin, by his aunt ''Sal'', who was from England. ''Aunt Sal'' visited her family in Ireland often and always brought a gift, despite the fact that she could ill afford to. Aunt Sal kept lodgers in her home during the War, one of whom worked in a silversmith's who presented these spoons to ''Aunt Sal'' as payment for his bed and board. Six of the spoons are hallmarked in 1936 and depict the crowned King Edward VIII, who famously abdicated the throne in order to marry Ms. Wallis Simpson, an American who was filing for her second divorce at the time. Edward was one of the shortest-reigning monarchs in British and Commonwealth history, who reigned from 20th January to 11th December 1936 and was never crowned.
