AN 18TH CENTURY DONEGAL CARVED FRUITWOOD 'PENAL CROSS', of traditional form under suspension loop, with narrow cross arm, carved with figure of the crucified Christ in high relief, with incised traditional iconography to the front and the reverse, including three die above the figure of Christ, and there are horizontal incisions on the figures left hand side, which may represent the ladder, and one of the vertical incisions on the figure's right hand side may represent the sword, dated 1714 or 1754. 20.5cm long, 5.5cm wide Provenance: passed to the current vendor by descent. This cross was lent to the National Museum for recording in 1976. Literature from the museum accompanies this lot detailing the further iconography.
