A VICTORIAN SILVER RECTANGULAR STAND, London 1890, retailed by Mappin & Webb, mark of Walter and John Barnard, with waved gadrooned rims above continuous pierced sides of scrolled foliage amongst flower heads, and opposing cartouches, one side crested, raised on acanthus leaf capped scroll feet (c.30ozs). 31.5cm wide, 18.5cm deep, 7.5cm high Walter and John Barnard were part of one of the oldest manufacturing silversmiths in the world. The firm passed through many hands and changed name with successive owners. It was established by Anthony Nelme around 1680, who passed the business to his son Francis until 1739; then Thomas Whipham, who later put together a partnership with Charles Wright, then the Chawners, John Emes, and finally to the Barnard family in the first part of the 19th century. The firm was converted into a limited liability company in 1910 under the name ''Edward Barnard & Sons Ltd.''. It remained as such until 1977, when Edward Barnard & Sons Limited became a subsidiary of Padgett & Braham Ltd.
