AN IRISH GEORGE III ROCOCO SILVER OVAL TUREEN AND COVER of large proportions, Dublin c.1750, mark of William Townsend (1726-75) (rubbed), the stepped and domed cover with pineapple finial above embossed hands of game birds, swags, dolphins and bound carrots, horse radishes and other vegetables amongst scrollwork, scallop shells and entwined foliage and cartouches, crested, raised on four shell and acanthus capped paw feet (circa 85oz). 22cm high, 33.5cm wide over handles The arms are those of MacNamara of Doolin and Ennistymon House, County Clare. It is thought that it is for William MacNamara, eldest son of Bartholomew MacNamara (b.1685). William was born in 1714 and is recorded as marrying Catherine, daughter and heiress of Francis Sarsfield of Doolin who owned significant tracts of land in County Clare. Following their marriage they settled at Doolin, parish of Killilagh. Provenance: Bought at Sotheby's 3 May 1984, ''Important Silver & Gold Auction''
