No. 40 Roy Johnston, originally from Pomeroy, Co. Tyrone, studied at Stranmillis College and then at the Belfast College of Art. With his strong passion for the history of art as well as art practice, he was senior lecturer at the University of Ulster and has published books on Irish artists, amongst them Roderic O'Connor. His own work has been exhibited widely in Ireland and the UK as well as on the continent and in the US. His success can be measured by his solo show at the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery in 1985 as well as his inclusion in the recent monumental exhibition Irish Art of the Seventies shown at the Crawford Art Gallery and the Irish Museum of Modern Art. During the peak of his artistic output he won various awards, including the Art in Context Award in Belfast in 1975; the Howmedica Prize for Sculpture and the Scott Tallon and Walker Prize for Painting at the Oireachtas Exhibition in 1985.
