Nathaniel Hone RHA (1831-1917) The Bog of Erris, Co Mayo Oil on canvas, 59.5 x 91cm (23 x 36'') Provenance: Purchased in these rooms 7th May 1981, Cat No. 36 by current owner. Exhibited: 'Nathaniel Hone the Younger' Exhibition, The National Gallery of Ireland, June - August 1991, Cat No. 34. Literature: * 'Four Irish Landscape Painters', Thomas Bodkin 1920, Plate XIX * Nathaniel Hone Exhibition Catalogue, The National Gallery of Ireland, pages 118 and 119. (Take note from National Gallery Catalogue page 118) Julian Campbell has written : Hone visited Co. Mayo in c.1880, exhibiting a painting entitled Moor in Erris at the R.H.A. in 1881. That may be the better known painting Erris, Co. Mayo. The present picture takes a similar view, looking across the bog towards distant mountains, but is painted with such boldness and spontaneity that it may belong to a later date. The Jamesons owned Skeskin Lodge at Bellacorick in the plains of Erris, west of Crossmolina - one of the most remote and unpopulated parts of the country. Hone viewed the landscape from this location, looking south across the bog towards Slieve Car or Nephin Beg. The mountains, beneath great rolling western skies, are partially obscured by cloud, white and grey, with touches of blue at the top of the composition. The pool of the water in the foreground, reflecting the sky, contrasts with the sombre greens and browns of the bog. Characteristically, the foreground is indicated by bold, sweeping brushstrokes. Hone balances light and dark tones, but his touches of pure colours, red, blue and mauve, here and there in the bog, gives a fresh, more modern feeling to his painting.
