Charles Lamb RHA RUA (1893-1964) The Red Shawl Oil on canvas, 63.5 x 48.3cm (25 x 19'') Signed Lalli Lamb has informed us the most likely title for this work is 'An Rinn, An Cheathrú Rua' Exhibited: 'The Christmas Exhibition' The Frederick Gallery, November 1997, cat. No. 44. Illustrated; Gendering Irish Landscape, The Lewis Glucksman Gallery, Cork, Autumn 2006 This is also thought to have been exhibited at the Charles Lamb Exhibition, The Stephen's Green Gallery, 1928, cat. No. 1, costing 15.0.0. This is an early work by the artist and is not untypical of a period of social realism, which Lamb, like so many others, undertook in his analysis of an Irish, type as understood deriving from the western seaboard. The pose of and lighting is typical of the transportation of the figure from the outdoors to a studio situation. The technique of double lighting the figure, particularly the face is an Orpenesque trick, undertaken in order to give modeling and form to the face as well as the figure which in this case is disguised by the use of the great outer shawl. Laillí Lamb has informed us she is a young girl from An Rinn, An Cheathru Rua, but unfortunately cannot be identified at this time.
