Sean Scully (b.1946) Striped composition acrylic on paper, 62 x 95cm, (24.4 x 37.4'') Signed and dated '72 Provenance: Gifted from the artist to the present owner, December 1972 Sean Scully today ranks as one of the world's most important contemporary painters, proved by the fact that he is fiercely claimed by Ireland, America and Great Britain. Works by him currently hang in some of the most prestigious galleries and private collections worldwide. His is truly an international art, accessible to all through its honesty and directness. The present work, dated 1972, is one of the earliest examples to come on the open market. Painted at a pivotal time in the artist's career, it was executed post his formative trip to Morocco in 1969 and prior to his first one-man sell-out show the following year (Rowan Gallery, London, 1973). Whilst in Morocco he saw long strips of dyed wool being hung out side by side by carpet makers, this trip was instrumental for the artist in the development of the stripe as a motif. Further travel added to this experience as he took note of Navajo blankets and Kelims. The dynamic composition and sundrenched palette clearly evokes his early predilection for the exotic and expedition. Unlike the later more sombre paintings, this work has a frenetic energy that is captivating. Diagonal bands and lines intersect and overlap, creating a feeling of space. The influence of op art, and Bridget Reilly in particular, is apparent in the balanced geometry. Here is an abstraction that invites dialogue with the viewer and Scully has always cited the 'spiritual' aspect of his oeuvre. Indeed he has commented that he ''is trying to get at deep emotions through simple forms'' (Irish Arts Review, Spring 2006, p.75). Striped composition bears witness to the origins of Scully's 30 year love affair with the stripe, which has shifted and evolved but never diminished.
