Louis Le Brocquy HRHA (b.1916) Travellers (1948) Colour inverted Aubusson Tapestry, 180 x 100cm, (71 x 39.5'') Signed in weave of tapestry. Atelier Ren? Duch? 1998. Numbered 2/9.Signed and numbered by the artist on label verso Exhibited: The Taylor Galleries, ''Louis Le Brocquy - Aubusson Tapestries'' Exhibition, May 2000 where purchased by current owner. This exhibition travelled on to Agnews London In 1948 the Edinburgh Tapestry Weavers, an ancient industry under the patronage of the late Marquis of Bute, invited a number of painters, then working in London, each to design his first tapestry. These artists included Stanley Spencer, Jankel Adler, Graham Sutherland and Louid Le Brocquy. Louis Le Brocquy's first tapestry was Travellers and it made an immediate impression among the critics.
