Sean O'Sullivan RHA (1906-1964) Oughterard, Co Galway (1944) Oil on board, 35 x 50cm, (13.75 x 19.75'') Signed. Inscribed with title verso Provenance: The Kinlen Collection. Purchased from the artist The artist stayed in Sweeney's Hotel, Oughterard in 1944 when he was painting several portraits of sitters in the area, including Claude Chavasse, living at Ross House; the Hodson family at Currareevagh just outside Oughterard and Sheila Dunlop (Sheila Mary Cathcart Dunlop 1917-2007) the daughter of Canon Douglas Dunlop rector of Oughterard, who was engaged to Michael Morris, 3rd.Lord Killanin of Spiddal House Co. Galway. She married Lord Killanin in 1945 having served as an able cryptographer at Bletchley Park during World War II. She was awarded the MBE in 1946 for her contribution to the war effort at Bletchley. The Village noted for its fishing river the Owenriff and its nearby outlet Lough Corrib was and remains a haven for fisherfolk for almost two centuries. It was the most westerly part of the Estate of the Martins of Ross, kinsmen to the Martins of Ballynahinch and whose estate commenced at the end of the Village as the road rises to meet the moorland stretching all the way to the estates of Lord Sligo at Leenane in North Connemara. O'Sullivan was to move on to Clifden and to paint a number of portraits of other local notables including Oliver St.John Gogarty and his wife Martha Douane of Renvyle House and Mrs.Isabelle Foyle of the old Railway hotel in Clifden(later the Clifden Bay Hotel) as well as an important group of landscapes and portraits in South Connemara around Rosmuc and which were sold in these rooms 2007.
