Daniel O'Neill (1920-1974) Figure on the Beach, Tyrella Oil on masonite board, 45.5. x 81cm (18 x 32'') Signed The close-cropped composition of this work brings the reclining figure into full view in front of a panoramic landscape. The horizon is marked with whitewash houses to the left, a dark rocky outcrop in the centre, and distant blue mountains on the right - the undulating forms performing the double function of creating a rhythmic visual pattern and defining the picture plane as it recedes behind the figure. But she is the real focus of the picture. Her face is calm and serene. She has none of the anxiety found in many of O'Neill's female subjects, who seem isolated or trapped. This scene is entirely free of the dark mood O'Neill often evokes, instead having a relaxed and leisurely atmosphere. The figure is inviting and carefree, the lift of her leg and cast aside hat giving a playful tone to the painting. O'Neill's colouring implies evening is approaching, and the glow of the girl's skin suggests she has been sunbathing. The franticly applied brushstrokes that give form to the sky may suggest an oncoming storm, but the interweaving of rainbow colours gently dismisses any sense of threat.
