John B. Vallely (b.1941) The Session Oil on canvas, 51 x 75.5cm (20 x 29.75'') Signed Provenance: A private collection, Dublin, who aquired it through the Emer Gallery Belfast. Armagh artist John B. Vallely studied at the Belfast College of Art, where he was taught by Tom Carr, and went on to further studies at the Edinburgh Art College before returning to his home town where he has lived and worked since. An avid supporter of Irish heritage in terms of both sport and music, Vallely founded the Armagh Piper's Club in the 1970s. Not only did the club allow him to actively support traditional Irish music and pass on his own knowledge, but it became the meeting point for his love of music and his art. In this work, which is large considering the intimate scale of Vallely's works, the rhapsody of the group of musicians is intensified by the artist's use of strong colours.
