Thomas Ryan PPRHA (b.1929) All Ireland Hurling Final 1963, Waterford-V-Kilkenny Oil on canvas, 60 x 70cms Signed and dated 1963 and inscribed verso Provenance: From a Private Dublin Collection In September 1963, Kilkenny took on Waterford in that year's All Ireland Hurling Final in Croke Park in Dublin. The present painting captures a moment during play, looking from a corner position high in the terraces across the vast expanse of the pitch, which is bathed in sunlight. The artist, and by extension the viewer, is very much part of the crowd and treats his position in a similar manner to Jack B.Yeats with the heads of fellow spectators surrounding the viewer, drawing you into the action and the excitement just as Yeats did in his iconic 'Liffey Swim'. As it happened, Kilkenny won the match scoring 4 goals and 17 points to Waterford's 6-8. Co-incidentally, forty five years later, the same two counties fought out the 2008 final only for Kilkenny to emerge as victors, yet again.
