Edward Delaney RHA (1930-2009) King & Queen Bronze on granite base, two figures, 250/260 x 61 x 61cm deep (Queen 98.5 x 24 x 24'' incl. base) (King 102.4 x 24 x 24'' incl. base) Unique (2) Provenance: From a private collection, Co. Galway The loops that form the torsos of these towering figures became a recurring structural and stylistic motif for Delaney in the 1960s. This evocative embellishment is suggestive of organic masses like seaweed, moss or spores, suggesting the fragile and ephemeral nature of life, yet cast in bronze they seem to strive for permanence. A number of figures of a similar size were cast by Delaney in the 1960s, for example the Wolfe Tone Monument in St. Stephen's Green, and ''Immigrant'' which appeared at a Project Arts Centre exhibition in 1975. Although the figures in St. Stephen's Green are constructed as solid beings rather than the more decorated and pierced forms on offer here, the similarity in overall shape and stature of these works seems to link them together as a collective memorial to the Great Famine.
