Primrose, an army officer, made a tour of Ireland just after the famine. These two views made on the same day record a part of his trip. The pattern which he stumbled upon gives a spontaneous view of the gathering at what is now Healys Hotel and with Lord Lucans lodge (and barracks to guard him). It is a very valuable and objective study of the social conditions prevailing at a precise date in County Mayo.
