Biography

Born in Dublin 1939 he began his artistic career in Belfast in the 1950s as an apprentice to the linen designer John Shaw Brown. After three years there he returned to the capital and worked as a commercial artist for an advertising company.  An avid traveler Graham has been on numerous expeditions to the Arctic, journeys which have had a profound impact on his painting style. Using his artistic practice as a way to engage with the experiences and memories of those unfamiliar and magnificen
t landscapes.  While his works are abstracted in style, using colour and form to create the compositions, they are always tied in some way to the natural, figurative world. They are attempts to explore his subconscious subjective experience and rhythm of his environment.  Alan Graham has exhibited in various group shows in Dublin and solo exhibitions with the Hylands Gallery and James Wray & Co. in Belfast. He lives and works for part of the year in Provence in the South of France.
