Biography

Born in Dublin, Alice Hanratty studied at the National College of Art and Design and at the Hornsey College of Art in London. Best known for her printmaking skills, she has held solo shows in Dublin, Bangor and in Nairobi, Kenya. Although familiar with many printing techniques, etching is Hanratty's favoured medium. Her subjects display a variety of influences from medieval and renaissance paintings and indigenous African wood-carvings to Punch and Judy puppets. Her work has been included in gr
oup shows at home and abroad, including ‘The Delighted Eye’ in London (1979); ‘Irish Artists’ in Chicago (1980); ‘Irish Women Artists from the Eighteenth Century to the Present Day’ in Dublin (1987); ‘International Impact Exhibition’ in Kyoto (1989); ‘London Original Print Fair’ at the Royal Academy of Arts (1995); and the Estampe International Print Exchange’ in Paris (2001). Her work is represented in numerous collections, both private and public, and can be seen in the collections of Trinity College Dublin, the Arts Council of Ireland and Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
