Biography

Born in Dublin in 1947, Ciarán Lennon studied at the National College of Art & Design from 1963 to 1967. He has been awarded the Pollock Krasner Foundation Award twice in 1991 and in 1997. He is a member of Aosdána and in 1996 he was chosen to represent Ireland at the São Paulo Biennial in Brazil. He has had numerous solo exhibitions in museums and art galleries in Ireland and abroad.  Lennon`s art, Porous Plane, begun in the 1970s with Folded/ Unrolled paintings, has continued to cre
ate innovative forms of painting. The aluminium block when it is rubbed by hand using abrasive paper and a liquid binder together, makes a viscous pigment appear from within the surface creating its own paint from the element of the block itself. Lennon’s work is represented in many major collections including Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane; the National Gallery of Ireland; Irish Museum of Modern Art; Kamarsky Collection, New York and the Fogg Museum of Fine Art, Harvard.
