John O’Leary was born in Cork and studied at the Crawford School of Art from 1954 to 1957. Following this he was awarded that Gibson Bequest Scholarship to study in Paris where he studied at the Atelier Andre Lhote and the Academie Julian.
During his life he was a highly active member of the arts community in Ireland – a founding member of Cork Arts Society, he also taught at the Crawford and the VEC in Cork and later at Sligo RTC, where he became head of Fine Art.
O’Leary’s work fea
tured in exhibitions nationwide and was the subject of a retrospective at the Crawford Art Gallery in 2002.
