Biography

Born in Dublin in 1947, Belton attended the National College of Art and Design from 1966 to 1972. Belton is renowned for his sharply executed and meticulously detailed still-life compositions. These oil paintings most often consist of household objects, sometimes shown in stark contrast with more unusual objects and always consisting of his characteristic inclusion of an egg. Synonymous with Belton’s painting is his use of cool tones, his attention to detail and his evocative use of texture.
Belton has exhibited widely in Irish galleries, including the Tom Caldwell Gallery, Dublin; Frank Lewis Gallery, Killarney; Riverrun Gallery, Dublin, the Oisin Gallery, Dublin and Ib Jorgensen Fine Art, Dublin. Furthermore, his work is currently being shown in numerous public collections including the Office of Public Works, National Self-Portrait Collection and Limerick University. He was elected as Member of the RHA in 1991 and served as Keeper from 1995 to 2001.
