Originally from Lancashire in England, Neil Shawcross studied at the Bolton College of Art and Lancaster College of Art before moving to Belfast to take up the position of Lecturer at the Belfast College of Art. Primarily a portrait painter, he is also a print maker and has designed large scale stained glass installations. Awards he has won include the Gallagher Portrait prize and the RUA Conor award in 1975 and 1999 and the RUA’s Gold Medal in1978, 1982, 1987, 1994, 1997 and 2001.Shawcross
was made a full academician of the RUA in 1977 and was awarded an MBE for his services to art in 2014.
