Biography

Originally from Limerick, Norman Garstin went to Belgium in 1880 and spent two years in Antwerp studying under Charles Verlat. From there he moved to Paris where he came into contact with Edgar Degas and worked for three years in Charles Carolus-Duran’s studio. Garstin exhibited at the RHA continually throughout his career, the first occasion was in 1883 when he sent a painting over from Paris. An avid traveller, he spent a short time in Italy and Spain, and settled in Newlyn, Cornwall for a t
ime where he became associated with the Newlyn School artists. Garstin exhibited at the Royal Academy, London Fine Art Society, Ridley Art Club, Walker Gallery in Liverpool and twice at the Royal Scottish Academy. He was a member of the New English Art Club, and was included in Hugh Lane’s exhibition of Irish Art at Guildhall in London (1904). Examples of his work can be found at the National Gallery of Ireland, Victoria and Albert Museum and the Tate Gallery.    A touring exhibition of his work and that of his daughter Alethea was sponsored by the Penwith Society of Arts in 1978 and included the National Gallery of Ireland in its itinerary.
