Biography

Brigid Ganly was the daughter of the artist Dermod O’Brien who became President of the RHA in the year she was born a position he held till 1944 and spent her early childhood at the family estates in Limerick , Cahirmoyle before the family returned to Dublin in 1919. She attended the Metropolitan School of Art under Tuohy and won prizes for sculpture which she studied with Oliver Sheppard. She continued her studies at the RHA Schools where her teachers included Margaret Clarke and Sean O’Su
llivan. She continued her studies in Florence and Rome . She was a regular exhibitor at the RHA where she became a full member in 1935 and with the Watercolour Society of Ireland. Ganly studied with Andre Lhote in 1951 but his influence on her subsequent work was limited. Brigid Ganly was included in the 2014 exhibition 'Irish Women Artists: 1870-1970'.
