Biography

Born in India, Salkeld entered the Metropolitan School of Art at the age of fifteen. In 1921 he went to Kassel, Germany and studied art under Ewald Dulberg. In 1924 he returned to Dublin and held his first solo show at the Dublin Painters’ Gallery. He also exhibited in the New Irish Salon Exhibition in Mill’s Hall, Dublin.  After a lapse of ten years, he returned in 1939 to the RHA and from then unitl 1968 showed fifty-six works. The 1930s also saw his Gayfield Press in action. As
owner and often operator of the hand press, he was responsible for all types of commercial art and publicity. In 1941 he painted wall panels in Davy Byrne’s pub. Ballet scenes often formed the subject matter of his paintings in the 1940s.  Salkeld's work featured in "A celebration of Irish Art and Modernism" (2011) Exhibition.
