WATERCOLOUR PORTRAIT OF 2ND LIEUTENANT D.B.M.R. GRAHAM, 5TH DUKE OF MONTROSE, 5TH ROYAL IRISH LANCERS. A finely detailed full length study, the Duke wearing the full dress uniform of an officer of the 5th Royal Irish Lancers, by Richard Simkin (1840-1926), the artist noting that the image was taken from a photograph by Bassano, the image 4'' x 6'' (10 x 16cm) approx. The 5th Royal Irish Lancers, originally raised in 1689, were disbanded in 1799 after the regiment was found to have been infiltrated by United Irish rebels. Re-raised in 1858 as a result of the emergency occasioned by the outbreak of the Indian Mutiny and the desperate need for additional cavalry regiments, it was subsequently amalgamated with the 16th Lancers as part of the post WW1 military reductions and amalgamations. Douglas Beresford Malise Ronald Graham, 5th Duke of Montrose (1852-1925), was first commissioned 2nd Lieutenant 1872, transferred to the 5th Lancers with the rank of Lieutenant 14th August 1874 and retired from the army in 1878. He subsequently came out of retirement to command the 3rd Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders during the Boer War, February - May 1902 (awarded Queen's medal and 2 clasps).
